Corian Worktops

You may have heard of Corian kitchen worktops but may wonder what exactly it is. Corian is a brand of solid surface worktop. It is made by mixing bauxite filler and pigments with acrylic resin which is used to form a solid sheet which is then bonded onto a timber substrate to make a solid surface worktop. Corian worktops have no visible joints and, it is possible to have the kitchen sink unit make from the same material which gives a very smooth, seamless look.

There are several advantages to using Corian which is available in a myriad of colours. It is very malleable and can be easily formed into different shapes, so if you want curves inside of straight edges to your worktops, then Corian might be just the answer you are looking for. It is also non-porous which means that it is is highly resistant to stains. If it does get accidentally chipped or scratched, then it can be easily and cheaply repaired by sanding down.

Do be aware that it is not as heat-resistant as quartz, marble or granite so you are advised to use pot stands for hot pots and pans. The main disadvantage of Corian is that the timber substrate underneath could become water damaged which may cause warping so do ensure that you wipe up any spills as soon as they occur.

However, if you look after your worktop and make sure you protect it by not placing hot pans directly onto its surface and make sure that you don’t cut fruit and vegetables on the surface but always use a chopping board, then your worktop should look good for years to come.
